The rumors have been swirling around for about two months. Many a sportscaster would have given you odds that Tuomo Ruutu would be dealt away but instead the Carolina Hurricanes and Tuomo Ruutu have come to terms. And the terms are: four more years and 4.75 million dollars a year.

The contract also says that Ruutu cannot be traded without his permission for the first three years of the new deal. General Manager Jim Rutherford said when he spoke to Ruutu a few weeks ago that he had expressed an interest in staying with the team.  Rutherford also has said he thought the team as it is was somewhat special and he wasn't about to "blow up" the team.

"He's an important player to our team," Rutherford said."And he's the type of player who, long term, would take a long time to replace."

Unfortunately, Ruutu was injured last week and won't be back with the team for about two more weeks. The good part is that he WILL be back with the team. Hurricane fans everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief. Ruutu was set to become a free agent at the end of this season if he wasn't traded.
