The Carolina Hurricanes waived 23-year-old forward Zach Boychuk Wednesday after recalling forward Andreas Nodl from their American Hockey League affiliate the Charlotte Checkers. Boychuk was claimed off waivers Thursday by the Pittsburgh Penguins who are looking to fill a roster spot due to injury. The Penguins are 4-3 to begin this shortened season and currently sit in third behind the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils in the Atlantic Division.
Zach Boychuk was the Carolina Hurricanes 2008 Entry Draft first-round pick (14th overall), and was leading the Charlotte Checkers in scoring this season with 16 goals and 16 assists (32 total points) in 37 games played this season. He appeared in the Hurricanes' season-opening loss to the Florida Panthers and has been a healthy scratch for the other four games so far this season. Boychuk will finish his Carolina Hurricanes career with seven goals and 11 assists (18 total points) in 73 career NHL games.
